Ms. D’Andra Huyler is a graduate student at The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus. She is pursuing her Master of Science degree in counseling psychology and is expected to graduate in the Fall of 2021. Ms. Huyler initially graduated from The University of The Bahamas with her Bachelor of Arts in psychology specializing in industrial and organizational psychology and has been advocating for mental health and well-being every day since. Her belief is that adults spend the majority of their waking lives working. Therefore, her current goal and purpose is to create and advocate for working environments that cater to mental health and foster overall wellbeing. The total sum of her knowledge and skill base is being channeled into the success of this goal and purpose! She aspires to one day graduate with her Ph.D. and create both an employment agency and an employee assistance program that will revitalize the business industry and employment sector within The Bahamas and across the Caribbean through mental health advocacy.
Through the study of psychology, she has learned to utilize an eclectic approach to therapy, and therefore, I rely on multiple methods, techniques, and interventions to bring about change for my clients. Mostly drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness her theory of change is decidedly client-centered. Change to her is a very dynamic process there are many layers to what brings about change and what constitutes a change for clients, which in turn also makes it a very individualized process. It is her belief that in order for change to occur therapists or counselor must first be aware of what their clients’ believe change looks like for them and frame the client’s theory of change within the context of their effect, behavior, cognition, experiences, strengths, weaknesses, and level of self-awareness. This view requires counselors to consider mental health and counseling as a very integrative process where the client is considered their own agent of change.
